Overview

The classic walk to the foot of Sagarmatha, on trails worn smooth by Sherpa traders and Tibetan pilgrims long before the first expeditions came. We move slowly, sleep two nights in Namche to acclimatise, take the side trail to Khumjung, and reach base camp on day eleven.

Day by day

  1. 01

    Fly Kathmandu → Lukla, walk to Phakding

    A short half-day along the Dudh Kosi to settle in.

  2. 02

    Phakding to Namche Bazaar

    The long climb into the Khumbu through pine and rhododendron.

  3. 03

    Acclimatisation day in Namche

    A morning walk to the Everest View Hotel; afternoon in the bazaar.

  4. 04

    Namche to Tengboche

    Down to the Imja Khola, then up to the great monastery.

  5. 05

    Tengboche to Dingboche

    Above the tree line, into the high pastures.

  6. 06

    Acclimatisation day at Dingboche

    An optional walk up Nangkartshang for a long view of Makalu.

  7. 07

    Dingboche to Lobuche

    Past the memorials at Thukla pass.

  8. 08

    Lobuche to Gorak Shep, EBC, return

    The day. Long, slow, unforgettable.

  9. 09

    Sunrise on Kala Patthar, descend to Pheriche

    First light on Everest from 5,545 m, then a long descent.

  10. 10

    Pheriche to Namche

    A long walk back through Tengboche.

  11. 11

    Namche to Lukla

    The last full day on the trail.

  12. 12

    Fly Lukla → Kathmandu

    Hot shower. Better dinner.
